Simply Unforgettable
Austin, Texas, Round 1

Sharon Briceno

1. How many years have you taught?
19 years

2. What grade level are you currently teaching?
2nd Grade

3. What do you teach?
General Ed, Elementary

4. How many students have you enrolled in the Semple Math Challenge?
20

5. Have you executed the program in good faith, as written with no omissions or substitutions thus far in the Challenge?
All 20 students are in the Challenge. Exposure has varied in accordance with the attendance of most students who need the program most. Several of those students have 20-25 absences. The majority of the remaining students are working on (+most) above grade level. We have had many class periods in which all students are immersed in the program. Then, depending on the schedule (curriculum requirements) we may do 10-15 minutes (spotting – writing numerals) as a warm up 2 – 3 times a week. Targeted students have been pulled in small groups to give necessary teacher attention to their needs.

Current Routine:
1st: Semple Math Warm-Up (Lessons)
2nd: Curriculum Lesson
3rd: Independent Practice (may include Semple Practice)

6. Please comment on the math performance of each student as they entered the Challenge. Were they on or below grade level?
14 students were on or above grade level
3 just below grade level
3 well below grade level

7. What progress have you seen in their math skills over the last 30 days? Are they on or below grade level?
Fewer number reversals
Some improvement in quick recall of basic facts in Addition.

8. How do you rate the overall attitude, outlook and self-esteem of each student on a scale of 1 - 5, 1 being the lowest score? Comments are welcome.
A 3 B 1 C 2 D 3
E 2 F 3 G 3 H 4
I 4 J 4 K 4 L 5
M 5 N 4 O 5 P 4
Q 5 R 5 S 5 T 5

9. How does the portion of Semple Math you have now seen compare to any "non-Semple" learning materials you have used in the past? (Please do not identify and materials and programs by name.)
Connected more to multi-sensory approaches (esp. including stories). Targets number formations (actually writing the digits). Begins at stage where students transition from concrete numbers to abstract numbers.

10. Has any standardized or local testing been used as part of this Challenge? If so, please explain the means of assessment and share your findings with consideration for student privacy.
No – Benchmarks were given during this time period. This test did not require much use of Semple.

11. Would you recommend this program to other educators? Why or why not?
I would, especially beginning in earlier grades (K-1) to target students as they enter into abstract number concepts.

12. Should we sponsor a second round of the Challenge and for the purpose of sharing our Times Tables Kit?
Yes.

Jan Semple (Author) : Good for you to see the sequence as we move from the concrete to the abstract. 25 absences! Absences and transfers are two set backs that we all face in our classrooms no matter which materials we employ. The program starts slowly (because we check all the sub skills so thoroughly) but as you complete lesson 15 you really should be seeing excitement for Semple Math. This may help to curb absences. I would like to know which (Semple Math) lesson you are working on currently. We appreciate your feedback. Please do continue.
