Debby Brewington, of kis Consulting, is one of our highly trained Affiliated Consulting Experts trained and mentored by Jan Semple, the respected author of the Semple Math Program. Debby's goal for Semple Math is altruistic. She desires to share her expertise with others so that their lives will be richly improved. She witnessed firsthand the frustration experienced by her special education students as they struggled to comprehend math operations presented in programs claiming to be designed for learning disabled and dyslexic students. She discovered that, rather than addressing the unique learning style necessary for this 30 percent of the population to truly grasp math concepts, these programs only modified traditional procedures for performing mathematical tasks.

Debby's search for a math program distinctly different from the multitudes on the market, ended when she saw Semple Math displayed at a learning disabilities conference. She was impressed by its extensive use of mnemonics and multi-sensory tools to explain complicated processes. In fact, she herself had employed similar devices with great success during her years as a student!

Debby initiated the Semple Math Program in her classes and proudly watched her students demonstrate immediate improvement. They were paying attention in class, fascinated by stories, chants, and songs relating math information to their lives. They gained self-confidence as they easily conquered barriers, which, for many had taken years to build. They were motivated to learn more, asked for additional homework, and wanted to bring their siblings and friends to class because math had become so fun!

Every year, Debby's students showed marked improvement on the mandated state testing administered to all special education students in Texas. After several years of Semple Math instruction, her students re-entered regular math classes on grade level. These students, armed with math skills granted them through the Semple Math Program and elated with their passing scores on the state mandated tests, are empowered for the rest of their lives. Imagine the joy these students and their teacher share!!

As a consultant, Debby conducts monthly workshops, presents at educational conferences and continually advises those who have completed Semple Math training. As the proprietor and director of “keep it simple” Education Center, in the Central Texas area, Debby provides students of all ages the opportunity to gain essential math skills ranging from elementary basics to calculus.
