Participants using the Times Tables Kit:
(Free Times Tables Kit with one round of feedback)
As we mentioned earlier at risk math students will exhibit several signs of trouble during first and second grade. Students likely to be at risk may color outside of the lines, reverse numerals, act out, withdraw, and/or write answers anywhere on the paper with no sense of place value. In most cases these signs are difficult to detect as students can meet the minimal requirements by counting on their fingers. In fact, most of the commonly used programs rely heavily on counting in the early grades. This actually leads to issues for many students later on. At risk elementary students “hit the wall” in third grade as they encounter the multiplication facts. The students who have relied on finger counting instead of learning and applying basic math concepts are finally revealed. Commonly used programs fail to identify the signs in the first two grades. They allow many students to reach third grade unprepared for multiplication. Our Semple Math Times Table Kit addresses the issue of teaching the multiplication facts in any classroom. It is actually a derivative work taken from Level Three of the Semple Math Program. In all cases students are far better off to have all four levels of Semple Math. Such a student would have no need for a Times Tables Kit. The Kit is most appropriately used in a third or fourth grade classroom where the students have had little or no exposure to Semple Math. Please consider the following questions... Do you currently use memorization and repetition to teach the times tables? How is that working for you? Do the students enjoy the unit on the times tables? Do most of your students succeed in learning the multiplication facts? Will they still know the facts next Fall? Do you find yourself having to “back up and reteach” math concepts? Would you like to see the times tables unit become (“hands down”) your students' favorite experience all year??? Have you heard of Semple Math? Would you like to try some of our methods in your classroom? If you would like to look forward to teaching the times tables you really should take one of these kits and drop it into you regular curriculum. It is a self explanatory, self contained set of materials including the Manual, a workbook and a Music CD. Participants will agree to use the kit as written and return one (only one) feedback letter after the times tables unit has concluded. We expect participants to receive their kits in June, take the summer to thoroughly review the materials and send feedback to us by the end of December, 2007. A limited number of kits have been set aside. Please act quickly. |
